Sizing your work surface

Our desk shelf includes 33 electric standing desks with tops of 39.4, 47.2, 55 and 63 inches. Choosing between them comes down to what rests on the desk alongside your keyboard and mouse, and several models add a drawer under the top for the things you would rather not see.

The 39.4 and 47.2 inch tops fit a single external monitor and an open laptop beside it, with enough room left over for a notebook. They sit neatly in bedrooms, guest spaces, and smaller home offices where floor space is limited.

The 55 inch top gives you room for two full-sized monitors on stands, or a single ultra-wide display, while keeping clear space on both sides. If you use desktop speakers, a document tray, or a full desk mat, the wider top gives every item room without crowding your hands.

The 63 inch tops, offered in 23.6, 27.6 and 28 inch depths, are the ones to pick when the desk doubles as a workbench: two monitors, a laptop on a stand and a keyboard tray still leave the corners free.

Setting your working height

Each electric model lets you change desk height with motorized controls. A good sitting height allows your elbows to rest near a 90-degree angle with your feet flat on the floor. When you raise the desk to stand, your elbows should stay at that same natural angle while your shoulders remain relaxed.

Because the height adjusts across a wide range, a single desk can fit different people in the same home. Setting your preferred positions makes the transition quick, so changing your posture during the day becomes a simple habit.

Cable slack and movement

A desk that moves up and down needs extra slack in its wiring. Power cables, monitor cords, and device chargers all need enough length to reach outlets when the top is fully raised.

Before tucking cables away, raise the desk to its highest point. Check that every cord has enough give so nothing pulls tight or unplugs as the motorized legs extend. Grouping cables together keeps the underside of the desk clean and prevents wires from catching on chair arms or baseboards during adjustment.

Posture options and realistic expectations

A standing desk gives you the option to stand; it is not a substitute for exercise, and changing your work position will not cure back issues or resolve a medical condition.

What an adjustable desk gives you is choice. Shifting between sitting and standing lets you break up long hours in one posture, adjust your screen to eye level, and stay comfortable through the workday.
